The figure is variously interpreted as an actress, Venus and most recently as Cleopatra.
The rear wall was painted in II style, the front wall was painted in IV style, possibly part of a modernisation in ancient times.
According to Winsor Leach, “although, she has been called Venus she is more likely to be an actress, probably a mimic actress, representing a human character impelled by passion about to make her entrance on stage……
But the small enclosure that houses the Pompeian painting contains a singular and puzzling construction.
Standing before the figured background and apparently installed at a later date, is a blocking screen wall painted with a central aedicula, but lacking human figures.
To all appearances this wall has been constructed with the deliberate purpose of concealing the dramatic representation without the act of destroying it.
Did the owners lose patience with the actress who never acted?”
