According to Grimaldi –

“The removal of the floor does not seem to have been the work of the Bourbon excavators: in fact, at the time of discovery the tiles were not found in situ, unlike the various objects and furnishings including the facings of the triclinium couches, a bronze lamp (SAP, inv. 13112) and a small table with a cupid on a dolphin.”

To his left is Venus with a cupid or Eros on her shoulder and a dove at her feet.

To his right is Hesperus with a halo.

“A composition of two main figures facing each other in a sacred area by the sea ……………..”

Kuivalainen comments –

“This scene is exceptional in many ways: for the couple’s and panther’s postures, and for the rich environment with a statue and vessels. A Bacchus of the half-naked type helps a confused Ariadne up, while Theseus’s ship is sailing away. The statue of Diana adorned with a crown has a bronze parallel in the sanctuary of Apollo in Pompeii. (Note 423 – see Van Andringa 2012, p.94-95.)

The horizontal line is very high.”
