IX.5.11 Pompeii. December 2007.
Looking south towards doorway to room h, an ala, on east side of atrium b.
On the south wall were red side panels and a yellow central panel with small vignettes.
These panels were separated by narrow white compartments with painted candelabra.
The black zoccolo had panels separated by narrow compartments containing painted plants.
IX.5.11 Pompeii. December 2007. Wall on east side of atrium b, between doorway to room g, and north wall of room h.
The north wall of room h, the east ala, had a black zoccolo with panels separated by narrow compartments.
The middle of the walls had a central yellow panel with red side panels.
Mau thought that, almost certainly, on this pilaster facing the atrium would have been a personification of either autumn or winter, as was seen on the pilasters between rooms 3 and 4, and 7 and 8.
See Bullettino dell’Instituto di Corrispondenza
Archeologica (DAIR), 1879 (p.197).
According to Mau, the paintings of the cupids were numbered as 16-21 in room b, he described the large red and yellow panels with painted flying cupids with various unrecognisable attributes: height, c. 0.21.
17-21 between the decorations on the upper part of the wall;
17-19 on white background:
(17) on left wall, 0.25 high: cupid looking left carrying a conical cult object in his left hand, leaning on the shoulder: in the right hand stretched out towards the left a bunch of grapes.
(18) on facing wall, 0.35 high: standing woman crowned with leaves, with green robe without sleeves, carrying in her left hand, a plate with unrecognisable objects, her right hand lowered to the hem of her robe.
(19) on right wall, 0.25 high, cupid on foot looking ahead, with a club under the right arm.
(20), found under (17): in a rectangle with grey background, 0.10 high, 0.25 wide: to the right an open volume, to the left a pen and an unclear object, probably the inkwell. On the volume was written the following inscription, as written and supplied by Zangemeister (Notizie degli Scavi 1877, p.248) –
(21), found under (19), in a similar rectangle: an open triptych with pen: in the centre of each of the two visible pages, there was a small yellowish square.

Archeologica (DAIR), 1879, (p.197-8)
IX.5.11 Pompeii. Room h, north wall, wording from trace of poem, as shown in NdS.
Found in the left ala - described as the most beautiful reflection on Venus - was a trace of a poem.
According to Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss/Slaby (See www.manfredclauss.de) this read
[Non] ego tam
[c]ur[o]
Venere[m]
[d]e marmore
factam
c[a]rmin[inibus [CIL IV 3691]
According to Varone, its initial lines peep out from a papyrus scroll, set side by side with a quill and an inkstand in a painting which featured Eros posing with a bunch of grapes and a sceptre.
Only a few words of the poem could be made out “I don’t think a Venus made of marble would be as favourable to me as …….. “ but the text is now almost irrevocably lost.
This was CIL IV 3691.
See Varone, A., 2002. Erotica Pompeiana: Love Inscriptions on the Walls of Pompeii, Rome: L’erma di Bretschneider. (p. 29 and see Fig.1).
According to Bragantini, CIL IV 3691 was found on the north wall.
See Bragantini, de Vos, Badoni, 1986. Pitture e Pavimenti di Pompei, Parte 3. Rome: ICCD. (p. 474)
According to Fiorelli,
“on the wall to the left, finally, we have another Cupid with a bunch of grapes in his right hand, and an object that could not be identified in his left hand:
underneath in a deep purple rectangle one could see an open volume, on which were painted in black some partly vanished words and difficult to understand.
Those that could be read are recorded above”.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichitŕ, 1877, (p. 248).

Room h, drawing by Discanno showing a Cupid with a club, and seen underneath, in the small purple rectangles, were two fighters with daggers.
This would have been seen on the north wall, east end, according to PPM. (North wall, west side according to PPP).
According to Mau and Fiorelli, it would have been seen on the south wall -
“On the wall to the right was a Cupid with a club, and underneath in a small rectangle with a purple background one saw some fighters with daggers: on the wall to the left, finally we have another Cupid, that had a bunch of grapes in the right hand, and in his left an unidentifiable object, underneath in a rectangle with a purple background, one saw an open volume with some black words, partly vanished and difficult to understand.”

Sogliano describes the two Cupids as being from the east ala but does not give a wall location.

The ala was decorated with red and yellow panels, in half of which were painted Cupids.
Under the panels was a black zoccolo, and above them was a frieze finishing above with a stucco cornice.
In the small panels of this frieze we see painted on the back (east) wall, a woman’s figure on foot, crowned with fronds and dressed in a green robe, holding a plate or basket in her left hand, and holding the lower edge of her robe with her right hand.
On the wall to the right, was a Cupid with club, and under in small rectangles with purple backgrounds, one sees two fighters with daggers.
On the wall to the left, finally we have another Cupid, that has in his right hand a bunch of grapes and in the left, an object that cannot be defined, below in a rectangle with purple background, one sees an open volume, on which were painted some black words, in part vanished and difficult to read.
