VII.4.57 Pompeii. November 2018. According to the information card –
“The sundial was discovered at Pompeii on 14th July 1837 in the House of the Figured Capitals.
The dial consists of a portion of an oblique circular cone.
The lower curve
corresponded to the dates of 30 April and 12 August since the dial erroneously
terminates before the extension it ought to have had to capture the shadow cast
by the gnomon at the summer solstice.
There are 11 engraved hour lines: in accordance with the standard layout, the lines are made by joining the edges of the 12 respective parts into which the three day curves are divided.”

According to Boyce, the row of columns forming the western portico of the peristyle is built into the wall.
A rectangular niche bordered by solid walls stands upon a masonry base.

According to Jashemski, and Della Corte, at the time of the eruption the peristyle had been converted into an officina textrinum, or weaver’s workshop.
Inscribed graffiti indicate the location of 3 looms under the portico and record the names of the three servants or male weavers who attended them.
According to Della Corte, their names were –
Texe(ntis) Erati
locus (CIL IV 1570, 1571)
Tiburtinus (sic)
locus (CIL IV 1569)
Crescentis
locus (CIL IV 1572)

According to Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss/Slaby (See www.manfredclauss.de), these read -
