Looking south-west across middle peristyle, towards one of two dining rooms, and ala with doorway from cubiculum on west side of atrium.
According to Fiorelli, in this dining room on the left of the tablinum, which gave access through to the peristyle, a mosaic of Bacchus on a panther was found.

(Note: However, according to the information noticeboard from Naples Museum, the mosaic emblema with fishes was found in the room on the left of the tablinum.)

According to Jashemski, this peristyle was enclosed on all four sides by a portico supported by twenty-eight columns covered with fine white stucco.
These columns were in the process of being repaired at the time of the eruption.
In the middle of the garden was a base of a marble fountain, from which water jetted into a shallow pool.
