V.1.26 Pompeii. March 2009. Room “p”, north wall, and north-east corner, with purple/violet zoccolo/dado, and white middle zone.
According to PPM, the zoccolo was decorated with panels separated by narrow compartments decorated with flowers amongst palms.
In the middle of the north wall, at the rear of the alcove,
Mau saw “without a cornice and on a white background, the noted group of Mars
and Venus.” ………. In the side panels, seen on the left was a flying figure, on
the right a standing Cupid. He could not recognise any particulars in one or
other of the figures. (See Mau, BdI,
1876, p.230, no.35).

According to PPM –
Dionysus, standing, holding a thyrsus, was seen in the central panel of the alcove against the east wall.
See Carratelli,
G. P., 1990-2003. Pompei: Pitture e
Mosaici: Vol. III. Roma: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana, (p. 614 no.83).
According to Sogliano –
Dioniso in piedi col tirso nella destra, vestito di clamide pavonazza. (Bull.Inst, 1876, p.229)
(Standing Dionysus, with thyrsus in the right hand, dressed in a purple cloak).
See Sogliano, A., 1879. Le pitture murali campane scoverte negli anni 1867-79. Napoli: Giannini, (p.38, no.158).
Kuivalainen describes “a standing youth with a thyrsus in his right hand, a violet cloak on his left arm”.
In his comments – he says – The picture of Bacchus is located in a niche for a bed, which is rare”.
