IX.2.18 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 5, tablinum, looking west to garden area.
IX.2.18 Pompeii. Old undated photograph of room 5, tablinum, looking into garden area.
This old photograph shows the three painted walls: in the middle of the south wall was Ares enthroned, flanked on the east side panel by a vignette of a flying figure.
This probably was repeated by the panel on the west side, but which was incomplete at that place.
In the west wall, the panels on either side of the doorway to the garden area showed a vignette of a flying cupid.
On the north wall, there were panels with vignettes of flying figures. In the centre of the north wall would have been a large gap.
See Warscher, T. Codex Topographicus Pompeianus, IX.2. (1943), Swedish Institute, Rome. (no.97.), p. 178.
IX.2.18 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 5, north wall of tablinum.
The zoccolo would have been red, the side panels would have been yellow and showed a slight trace of a flying figure, see Sogliano 823.
The large gap in the middle of the wall would have been made in ancient times and would account for the loss of the entire middle panel and part of the red zoccolo.

In the middle of the wall on a red background, the painting of Ares enthroned was completely faded.
He was painted with a golden helmet on his head and dark red cloak, a lance in his left hand, and shield on the ground.
On the east side, the yellow panel showed traces of a flying figure.

IX.2.18 Pompeii. May 2005. Looking west through tablinum to garden area.
In the west wall on either side of the doorway, the zoccolo would have been red of a geometric type with rectangular decorations.
In the centre of the yellow panels of the middle zone would have been a vignette of a flying cupid.
North of the doorway would have been a flying cupid holding up a vase/pot on her shoulder (See Sogliano, 318).
South of the doorway would have been a flying cupid holding a pyx or a box (See Sogliano, 312).
