VIII.5.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 31, cubiculum. Marble sill and painted plaster on either side of doorway.
The flooring would have been of cocciopesto in which were scattered small polychrome flakes.

This room contained the remains of two small paintings when excavated.
They were Hero and Leander, and Ariadne watching the ship of Theseus sailing away.

The zoccolo/plinth was red decorated with painted plants in alternate panels and compartments.
The middle zone of the wall was white with a panel bordered by a red band.
The painting with the story of Hero and Leander was found here, but now completely disappeared.

Room 31, between the two red compartments dividing the panels on the west wall of the cubiculum, was a painted aedicula edged by a border, and with a painted sphynx with open wings at its top.

This short wall was subdivided by a narrow compartment on a red background, in which a leafy candelabra was painted.
In the white side panels were aediculae edged by bands with borders, at the centre of which some faded paintings were found.
