VIII.2.39 Pompeii. From an album by Roberto Rive, dated 1868. Photo courtesy of Rick Bauer.
According to Curtius – this was a wall from somewhere in the House of Joseph II and was painted by D’Amelio.
See Curtius, L., 1972. Die Wandmalerei Pompejis. New York: Hildesheim. (p.172, and photo no.108).
The words under the D'Amelio painting however attribute it to the House of Castor and Pollux (VI.9.6).
According to PPM, this painting, which was traditionally recognized as a wall from VIII.2.39 must now be identified as a wall of the ala of VIII.3.14.
We have included it here, as well as in VIII.3.14 and VI.9.6.
