VIII.2.14/16 Pompeii. Remains of mosaic of the Rape of the Leucippides (the daughters of Leucippus), on a slab of tufa.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 120619.
Found in a room at the rear of VII.2.14, according to Rom. Mitt, vii, 1892, p.12.
This room was at the rear of the triclinium with the shallow basin in VIII.2.16.
It would have been in the south-east corner of the northern peristyle, opposite the rectangular pool, also accessed from a corridor in VIII.2.14.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 120619.

According to the information card –
Rape of the daughters of Leucippus.
Fragment of mosaic pavement in opus vermiculatum made from polychrome tesserae. A chariot is being pulled by two horses beneath which a naked man lies. Another man on the chariot pulls up a woman, a part of whose dress and arm can be seen, onto the vehicle.
The scene is believed to show Castor and Pollux abducting the daughters of Leucippus – Hilaeria and Phoebe – who had already been promised to the sons of Aphareus – Idas, who was killed by Castor, and Linceus, who was struck by a thunderbolt thrown by Zeus.
(Early Ist century BC.)

Su di esso un altro uomo sta facendo salire una

Castore e Polluce che rapiscono le figlie di Leucippo, Ilaira e Febe, già
promesse ai figli di Afareo, Ida, ucciso da Castore, e Linceo, fulminato da
Zeus.

According to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii display notice –
The cork model was begun in 1865 by Giovanni Padiglione, one of several models predating the great model of the entire city now in Naples Archaeological Museum.
It was created over the course of several stages, following the advance of archaeological discoveries, as demonstrated by the Courtyard of the Moray Eels, excavated at the end of the nineteenth century, and the lower floors of the houses which were investigated in the 1930’s.
In addition, the wall and floor decorations, painted on paper, do not correspond with those that were originally present; most probably it was decided to substitute them with those of a more profound impact from other houses, for educational purposes.

VIII.2.13/14/16, Pompeii. May 2018.
According to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii display notice –
“The excavation conducted by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii in the Courtyard of the Moray Eels have brought to light traces of a previous dwelling, dating to the 2nd century BC, from which it has been possible to recover fragments of the floor and wall decorations.
The floor was decorated with a red background enriched with white tiles which created geometric and floral motifs. The wall decoration was constituted, in the central part, by relief panels in green and yellow, or which imitated marble veins, demarcated by white bands. The upper part of the wall was separated from the ceiling by a stucco frame decorated with “dentelli” (notches/teeth).”
