VII.7.32 Pompeii. Inscribed statue and base found 25th March 1817.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 3762.
iscrizione:
T D V S
M FABIVS SECVNDVS
PERMISSV AEDIL
A HORDIONI PROCVLI
TI IVLI RVFI
According to Tarallo, this is a marble base 380mm
high, 340mm long and 235mm wide.
In the front, at the two corners, there are two
graceful cherubs or cupids holding up a festoon of flowers and fruit.
Between the upper frame of the base and the
festoon there is the following inscription:
T D V S
M FABIVS SECVNDVS
PERMISSV AEDIL
A HORDIONI PROCVLI
TI IVLI RVFI
On the back, at the two corners, two birds are
sculpted in relief, on the two side faces hang two other festoons of leaves.
The base is surmounted by a quadruped with its
legs missing, which is supported by a tree trunk.
On its back are the vestiges of four legs of
another animal that jumped on it to tear it to pieces.
The whole, including the base, is 710 mm high.
Several scholars began to examine the donation:
each expressed his opinion, but, since they were not always in agreement in
determining the deity, to whom the temple belonged, where it was found, they
were not always in agreement in determining the deity, to whom it was
consecrated. This variety of opinions stemmed from the fact that the very name
of the deity was hidden under the initials T-D-V-S.
