VI.16.27 Pompeii. March 2009. Looking east across north portico. According to Jashemski, the peristyle garden had a wide portico on the north. The portico was supported by three columns and one engaged column, covered with rough plaster, red at the bottom. They were connected by a low masonry wall with an entrance into the garden between the first and second columns, from the east. Numerous dolia and large jars were found embedded in the soil in the north-east corner of the garden. See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas. According to Jashemski, the peristyle garden had a wide portico on the north.

The portico was supported by three columns and one engaged column, covered with rough plaster, red at the bottom.

They were connected by a low masonry wall with an entrance into the garden between the first and second columns, from the east.

Numerous dolia and large jars were found embedded in the soil in the north-east corner of the garden.

On the other three sides of the peristyle garden, there was no portico, but semi-columns protruded from the walls. These walls were covered at the top with rough plaster, but had a dado with a black background at their base. This dado was divided into many rectangular panels separated by half-columns and containing paintings of plants, with birds sitting on them, or flying around them. Sometimes the paintings became more interesting, such as in the first panel on the left side of the east wall. This showed two water-birds, one of whom was struggling with a small serpent. In the two central panels of the south wall, there was a peacock in each pecking over a twig with fruit, facing towards each other. In the first panel to the left of the west wall were two water-birds again, one of which in the attitude of fighting with a small serpent. See Notizie degli Scavi, 1908, (p.189-90)
