V.1.18 Pompeii.
Wall painting of a lying down Satyr and a Bacchante trying to free herself from him, found on the north wall of Room “l” (L).
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 110878.
According to Mau –
No.32. Resta
See Mau in Bullettino dell’Instituto di Corrispondenza
Archeologica (DAIR), 1877, p.26.
No.32. The one on the entrance wall to the right of the person entering remains; on the right you can barely see the head of a monster with a sharp mouth. Of the paintings that adorned the middle compartments of the walls, only the one on the right (north) wall remains, which was transported to the National Museum and exhibited in the Gallery of Obscene Objects. It depicts a reclining Satyr and a Bacchante who does her best to free herself from him. The composition is very beautiful.

House on the Via degli Augustali, Pompeii. Painting of satyr embracing a nymph.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 27705.
According to PPM -
This painting has been wrongly attributed to the triclinium in the house at V.1.18, but the measurements and details described by Sogliano (So.238) do not add up.
The painting was identified as early as 1868, 6-7 years before the excavation of this house, by Helbig (H.554) as coming from a house on the Via degli Augustali.

V.1.18 Pompeii. 1882 painting of wall with bacchante group. Room “l” (L), north wall at west end.
According to Presuhn:
“At the Peristyle, accessible through a door from the fauces “h”, there is a small living room or bedroom, which by its very rich, well executed and interesting decoration has a high value. Unfortunately, it has fallen quickly into ruin; However, immediately after the excavation, we had all the walls, with all the details, copied to the best of our ability, and we intend to create a nice publication with these plates.
The centre wall is bounded above by a wide painted stucco cornice.
We have copied a wall panel with an intermediate field at h=“l north wall” (Tafel VI). where the piece was unfortunately shortly afterwards lost to moisture and frost. The opposite field (with i= “l south wall”) shows a similar Bacchante group very well preserved. and even more green and yellow monochrome can also be found on the walls; similar to the sea centaur on our page. A panel from a central field is in the museum at Naples.”
und ebenso fìnden sich an den Wänden noch mehrere grüne und gelbe Monochrome;
ähnlich wie der Seekentaur auf unserem Blatt. Ein Tafelbild aus einem
Mittelfelde ist ins Museum zu Neapel versetzt.“
