III.2.1 Pompeii. c. June/July 1915. Description of “Salone d”, room 7.
In salone (d), in an earlier time, there was access through a doorway at the right end of the east wall in the atrium; then having walled-up this doorway, one entered the room through the small room (b) (our room 6), through an open doorway in the east wall of the latter.
This room, rectangular in shape, was covered by a large vault, traces of which are preserved, and lit by a square window at the top of the south wall.
The floor is made of crushed limestone like that of the small room (b). The walls bear an elegant decoration of 3rd Style on an entirely black background, which is the same on the opposite walls (fig.2 above). In the centre of each wall is the usual canopy formed by very thin white columns with Ionic capitals, supporting a light flat entablature. The upper part of the canopies invades the frieze; and on it rest light architectures, just as they likewise adorn the field of the frieze. On the sides of the canopies, on the short walls, a panel on each side; on the two long walls, divided by a sort of tall and slender yellow candelabrum, invading the frieze. In the area under the canopies, and in the centre of each panel, a “fantastic” flying animal, or a deer, a panther, a parrot, a swan, an eagle, etc.
The plinth/zoccolo is divided into panels of different shapes and sizes, limited by thin coloured bands, and in correspondence with the divisions of the main area of wall.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1915, (p.337).
