IX.9.6/10 Pompeii. 1964. Looking north across garden and the soil excavations. According to Wilhelmina, in this season they started with a trench towards the front of the garden. Eventually they opened six trenches, each about the same size as they had put in the previous time, but without excavating the entire width of garden. They felt it was unnecessary to excavate the entire garden, as they soon found roots in the trenches, which they marked at regular intervals.
