Temple of Aesculapius and Hygeia or Temple of Zeus Meilichios.

Excavated 1766, 1789, 1800, 1806 and 1869.

This may temporarily have been the Temple of the Capitoline Triad.

Three statues found in Temple now said to be of Bellona, Asclepius, and Venus, on display in Naples Museum “Campania Romana” gallery.

According to the information card in Naples Museum, the two other statues are closely associated with Asclepius.

The female statue has been identified as Venus while the bust depicting an armed goddess has been interpreted as Bellona.

The deities were cherished by the dictator Sulla and were added when the temple underwent major restoration in about 70 BC.

According to the information card in Naples Museum, the female figure may be identified as Bellona, the goddess of war worshipped in Rome at the Temple of Apollo Sosianus near the Circus Flaminius and, together with Asclepius, on Tiber Island.

The statue was considered to be a representation of Minerva but may now be identified as Bellona the goddess of war.

According to the information card in Naples Museum –

the god is shown wrapped in a thick cloak, and wears a wreath made of bay laurel, the tree sacred to his father Apollo.

Terracotta statue of Aesculapius or Asclepius the god of medicine and healing, found in the cella.

The statue was set in the platform with the use of mortar and, below the base, had “two bronze medals of intermediary form”.

Terracotta statue of a female deity, possibly Venus.

According to the information card in Naples Museum –

the female figure may be identified as Venus, protective deity of the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138-78 BC) who had conquered Pompei in 89 BC.

The statue was considered to be a representation of Hygeia.

She was the daughter of Aesculapius and Epione and was goddess of health, cleanliness, and sanitation.
