Excavated 1773, 1796 and 1867.

Part 7      Part 8      Part 9      Part 10      Part 11      Part 12       Part 1      Part 2      Part 3      Part 4      Part 5      Part 6

VIII.7.22 and VIII.7.23 would have been underneath the peristyle and dwelling of VIII.7.24.

It is very difficult to identify from the plan of the area and the photos exactly which area belongs to which.

The majority of the photos of VIII.7.22-24, unless specifically included in VIII.7.22 and VIII.7.23, including the underground areas, are included in VIII.7.24.

Via Stabiana is on the right of the photo.

According to Peters, (1963) found on the portico of a lower lying peristyle which preceded the present one, on the lower zone of its four walls were scenes from the lives of pygmies.
These scenes were interrupted only by doors and windows.
On the northern, eastern and southern walls large portions had remained in their original sites (fig.24).
Only fragments of the paintings were found on the western wall.
Both along the top and bottom the scenes were bordered by a wide red band.
See Peters, W.J.T. (1963): Landscape in Romano-Campanian Mural Paintings. The Netherland, Van Gorcum & Comp. (p.34)

According to Jacobelli, in the peristyle on the south section of the east wall next to the scene of a naval battle, there was a painting of gladiators.
The above photo and the following one must have been taken in the correct area.
Although the book was printed in 2003, it may have been written some years before.
There would not appear to be any paintings left on these walls.
She said the painting depicted the encounter between two gladiators, both armed with swords and rectangular shields.
Perhaps the one on the right had received a mortal blow or else he was attempting to deliver one because he appeared to be shown off balance.
There were also some other very faded paintings.
Jacobelli said one part of the fresco was detached and moved to house I.8.17.
Another part was left in place, and it has almost completely faded away.
See Jacobelli, L., 2003. Gladiators at Pompeii. Rome, L’Erma di Bretschneider. (p.81)

In RdSP, Avilia and Jacobelli wrote an article entitled Sea-battles in Pompeian paintings, in which they describe the scene of the naval battle which was found on this east wall.
See RIVISTA DI STUDI POMPEIANI, Vol. III, 1989, p.138 and p.144.

In RdSP, there is an article entitled: The restoration of the wall paintings at Pompeii: activities and practice of the SAP Laboratory.
There is a picture of assembling the pieces of the nilotic fresco from this peristyle.
