VIII.7.16 Pompeii. Between 1819 and 1832, drawing by Gell of a graffito “though drawn in all probability by a common soldier”.

According to Gell, “On a column, near the centre of one end, is the figure of a soldier, or gladiator, scratched with a nail”.

He did not say which end.
