According to Naples Archaeological Museum information card –
“Marble dedication of a portico by the quaestor Vibius Popidius, from
Early 1st century BC.
This is the earliest known Latin text from Pompeii. It refers to the
tuff portico along the south side of the Forum.
The office of quaestor was not included in the statute of the colony
founded by Sulla in 80 BC, but may have been in the statute introduced after
the Social War (87 BC), and this possibly explains its occurrence here. The
Popidii were one of the oldest local families and as such were excluded from
the ruling class of the colony.”
