VII.11.7 Pompeii. December 2005. Looking south from entrance.
According to Liselotte Eschebach, this is a stable with livestock watering and feeding rack.
To the right are holes for brackets, also large beam hole.
In the middle is a large round masonry vat or trough, next to it a well.
See Eschebach, L., 1993. Gebäudeverzeichnis und Stadtplan der antiken Stadt Pompeji. Köln: Böhlau, p. 323.
According to PPM, this was a Caupona, originally dependent on the house and communicating with it through a door in the rear room.
The shop, in the centre, had a counter for serving wine, with an adjoining hearth.
See Carratelli, G. P., 1990-2003. Pompei: Pitture e Mosaici. Roma: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana., VII, p. 453-5.
