o prigione.

In accordo con
quanto proposto dal De Sanctis all’epoca dei primi scavi, l’edificio sarebbe da
interpretare come carcere/prigione. Tuttavia, ad oggi, l’idea prevalente è
quella di riconoscervi la sede dell’Aerarium, forse spostato qui in seguito al
terremoto del 62 a.D. Un’altra possibilità è quella
di interpretare i resti monumentali come quelli di comuni botteghe (VII.7.24
–VII.7.25).
According to De Sanctis, when first excavated this was thought
to be the prison, but the prevailing view now is that it was the location,
perhaps temporarily after the 62AD earthquake, of the treasury or aerarium.
Others consider they could also be simply storerooms for the shops above at

The small doorway in the centre is the doorway to the aerarium or basement cellar at VII.7.27.
