II.7.9 Pompeii. Palaestra. Found May 15 1936. Silver cup with scenes of the cult of Isis found in Palaestra.
One of two (6044 and 6045) found near the body of a man in the Palestra, possibly an initiate of the Isis cult.
According to the Naples Archaeological Museum web site, the scene depicts the cult of Isis.
A bald priest is carrying a container (urnula) holding sacred water from the Nile to Isis.
The goddess is depicted with her head facing backwards.
Isis holds a sistrum in one arm, which is raised and bent, while with the other arm, held by her side, she holds a situla.
On the pedestal is the bull Apis, while on another base is the crocodile Sobek, who holds an oinochoe (jug).
Between the two is an altar.
These two cups represent an example of sacred, rather than household, furnishings.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 6044.
II.7.9 Pompeii. Palaestra. Found May 15th 1936. Silver cup with scenes of the cult of Isis.
One of two (6044 and 6045) found near the body of a man in the Palaestra, possibly an initiate of the Isis cult.
The goddess is depicted here with her head facing backwards.
Isis holds a sistrum in one arm, which is raised and bent, while with the other arm, held by her side, she holds a situla.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 6044.
The second silver cup (6045), not pictured here, shows a bald priest carrying a container (urnula), holding sacred water from the Nile, to the goddess Isis.
Isis carries in her bent arm a statuette of the Falcon god Seker or Sokaris, depicted standing on a small base.
In front of her, on an altar, there is a vase upon which there is the god Horus.
An arch supported by naked Caryatids, through which it is possible to see a series of steps with palms representing the sacred area, completes the scene.
These two cups represent an example of sacred, rather than household, furnishings.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 6045.
