I.10.7 Pompeii. Casa del Fabbro or House of the Smith or House of the Craftsman

or Domus and officina of M. Volusius Iuvencus and the Equitia.

Excavated 1914, 1927 and 1933.

Part 3      Part 4      Part 5      Part 1      Plan

I.10.7 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 4. Atrium. Looking south east across from Room 2.

I.10.7 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 3, atrium. Looking south-east across from room 2.

I.10.7 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 4. Atrium. South east corner.

I.10.7 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 3, south-east corner of atrium.

I.10.7 Pompeii. Reconstruction of wardrobe cupboard.
According to NdS –
"Of the numerous pieces of furniture (judging by what remained intact by the earlier searchers of the house through the series of breaches made in the walls of the various rooms) that must have been scattered in the various rooms, the remains of three wooden chests were found along the south-east walls of the atrium: among these there was also a beautiful panelled wardrobe (armarium) finely worked in the upper panels, with decoration of bronze studs, and with framed lower panels, like those of the doors of the house. The imprints obtained and the preserved elements have allowed us to draw a reconstructive sketch of the whole (fig. 13).
The other chests, found upturned and crushed by the collapse of the walls, would have been simple chests for the keeping of the clothes and objects for domestic use. The remains of another small cabinet filled with cases and small boxes of bronze were found in the tablinum, at the far side of the western wall from which it was perhaps suspended about a metre above the ground. " (Note 1).
“(Note 1 (page 292) –
The rather artistic nature of the furniture, the varied quality of the material found and the craftsman’s set of iron tools, may suggest that in recent times the house was inhabited by a “faber arcarius”, a maker of chests and furniture: this would also explain the presence of the veneers (lamine) and the encrustations of bone, as well as preparations for the encaustic colouring.
