I.2.6 Pompeii. December 2006. Looking north-west across peristyle to north side of house, and the atrium.
According to Jashemski, the west portico was entered directly from the atrium through the two doors.
The garden had a portico on four sides and was supported by eight stuccoed brick columns.
See above, now only stumps survive.

According to Warscher, quoting Mau in BdI, 1874, p.199, she described –
See Warscher T., 1935. Codex Topographicus Pompeianus: Regio I.2. (after no.18), Rome: DAIR, whose copyright it remains.
(translation: I. 2.6 "the painting of the peristyle
walls above the black zoccolo with ornaments, showed red compartments separated
by other more narrow black ones, on which were painted yellow twining candelabra;
in the middle of the red compartments there were paintings made with a little
diligence and represented masks and landscapes.")
I.2.6 Pompeii. December 2006. East wall of peristyle, looking south to triclinium.
Traces of original plaster can still be seen on the east wall of the peristyle.
When excavated this could be seen as painted in red and divided in compartments by gold coloured candelabra.
Photographs by Tatiana Warscher of this area can be seen in
- Garcia y Garcia, L., 2006. Danni di guerra a Pompei. Rome: L’Erma di Bretschneider. (p. 39)
When excavated the triclinium had 3 large paintings.
However, one fell together with its wall, another which showed Meleager at the hunt of the Calydonian boar remained slightly visible on the east wall (now faded) and the one most intact was sent to Naples Archaeological Museum, (NAP inventory number 109751, The theft of the Palladium), at the side of which were two medallions showing female busts crowned with foliage of vine leaves and herbs.
These were found on the south wall.
I.2.6 Pompeii. 1875 drawing by E. Eichler of a medallion of a young person crowned with vine foliage.
The drawing is titled “South wall of triclinium right from peristyle”.
PPM gives two possible locations, the second being a large room at the side of the stairs on the opposite side of the peristyle.
