According to Van der Graaff –

“The Porta Nola and its adjacent bastion in opus incertum has been featured frequently in early prints and illustrations (see Fig. 5.4).

Today, all of the opus incertum masonry is completely bare.

However, the majority of authors depict the remnants of a smooth plaster coating covering the masonry.

None of them indicates any additional colours on the surface or further First Style embellishments such as imitative ashlar blocks (Note 48).

Mazois, who as an architect and royal draftsman under Murat faithfully reproduced the ruins, also details the presence of a secondary coat of plaster, suggesting a refurbishment of the decorative scheme.”
