for article entitled “Isolation of the wall between the Vesuvian Gate
and Herculaneum Gate.”
(Isolamento della cinta murale fra Porta Vesuvio e Porta Ercolano).
According to Van der Graaff –
“Littered with scars from the Sullan siege, the fourteen-course section still displays some of the highest-quality finished masonry of the entire circuit (Note 75). It is also unique as the only stretch of fortifications composed entirely of tuff – a circumstance reflecting its prominent position next to the gate……….
The resulting effect set the stage for approaching viewers of the architectural character of the city behind the gate.”

Fortifications of Pompeii and Ancient Italy. Routledge, (p.65 and Note 75).
