Pompeii. Arched monument at south end of Forum, possibly for a statue of Augustus.

According to Mau, this is probably the pedestal for a colossal statue of Augustus. It was one of four monuments for the imperial family.

The other bases nearby were for statues of Claudius, Agrippina and Nero.

The arched monument was probably the pedestal for a colossal statue of Augustus.

The wide statue base on the right was for a colossal equestrian statue of Claudius.

The wide base on the left was for a colossal standing statue of Agrippina.

The smaller base (the nearest in this photograph) was for the smaller equestrian statue of Nero.

None of these statues survive.

The view shows the forum of Pompeii, with part of the pavement in Travertine, the foundations of statues, the civil buildings and at the top the basilica.
